Stuck? Changing your thinking – Change your life.

You’ve been struggling for weeks, months, maybe years.

I’m stuck, something isn’t right.

Maybe it’s a life transition or an unfulfilling career. Maybe you feel depressed or anxious most of the time.  Maybe you’re not coping as a parent.  Maybe it’s navigating a divorce.

There are many times in life we get stuck, we often wait for an external change to happen.  But change doesn’t happen to us it comes from within us.

Change can be hard but the benefits and opportunities that can open up outweigh the frustration of not enjoying your life.

Is therapy right for me?

We all know how to maintain our physical health; eat well, exercise, and visit the GP if we’re feeling unwell.  But we’re not taught how to look after our psychological health – our emotional mind.

Many people think that you only see a psychologist if you have a serious emotional problem. This is a misconception.

Psychologists help clients work through everyday challenges or personal goals, like improving parenting skills, overcoming procrastination or perfection, or managing exam/performance anxiety.

Our view at Westhealth Psychology is if the emotional or behavioural problem is getting in the way of you enjoying your life or stops you from living up to your potential, the sooner you seek help the better you’ll feel.

  • What is Westhealth Psychology’s approach to therapy?

We provide a welcoming and safe place for you to explore your concerns. We focus on building a collaborative therapeutic relationship based on trust, non judgement, and respect.

Our team of psychologists are experts in human behaviour who aim to help their clients thrive.

We bring our objectivity, knowledge of evidence based therapies and experience to developing your treatment.

    Put simply, the psychologist aims to;

    • Understand  the issue(s) your facing,

    • Helps you with strategies or skills to overcome your issue, and
    • Supports you as you implement your changes.

  • How do you begin feeling better – getting unstuck?

If you have been referred by your GP to our practice contact us and book an appointment (50 minutes).

If you are looking for a psychologist contact us and we can discuss who in our team may best assist you.

  • What you can expect at your first appointment?

At your first session, it’s the opportunity for your psychologist to get to know you.

They will ask questions about your reasons for seeking therapy in order to understand your emotional or behavioural issue that’s causing you to feel stuck. Types of questions you may be asked; how long have you been struggling with the issue? Past experiences you may have had with therapy, your goals for therapy.

It is important to know that there is no right or wrong answer.

You are in control.  If you do not want to delve into a particular area of your life it’s ok.

By the end of the session, the goal is for you to feel comfortable working with your psychologist.

If this isn’t the case, let your psychologist know. They may be able to alter their approach or recommend another psychologist who may be better suited.

  • How long before you feel better?

It really depends on how long you have had the problem.  Some problems resolve quickly in just a few sessions, whereas more complicated problems require a longer approach.

Usually, we would expect to see significant gains within 8 to 12 sessions.
